Traditional syringing flushes the ear blind, with warm water and no view of what is happening inside. Endoscopic microsuction is the opposite: a magnified camera view of your ear canal throughout, and a fine medical suction pen that lifts the wax out without introducing any water. That means no soaking, no pressure against the eardrum, and a much lower risk of infection or trauma. It is the method recommended for patients with a history of perforation, grommets, ear surgery, or recurrent ear infections — and it is what we use as standard in Coventry.

Why Endoscopic Microsuction Is the Safest Way to Clear Your Ears

Ear wax is a secretion produced in the first third of your ear canal. It is made up of alcohols, cholesterol, lipids and it is designed to protect the ear from infection or foreign bodies. The mechanism works perfectly under normal circumstances. Ear wax is secreted which then naturally moves out of the ear canal with jaw movements. The problems arise if you are more prone to ear wax build up which can be caused by
  • Cotton bud use
  • Hearing aid users
  • Use of in ear headphones
  • History of infections or operations
  • Narrow ear canals (more common in older patients)

At this point ear wax can no longer move out of the ear canal which can lead to blockages and sudden drops in your hearing as there is an obstruction which prevents sound from getting through to your eardrum.

How much does ear wax removal cost in Coventry?

Ear wax removal is £50 for one ear and £70 for both ears at our Coventry clinic. There are no add-on charges. If we examine your ears and find no wax, you are not charged for a removal that did not happen — we will explain what is causing your symptoms and what to do next.

No. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 369 0780. Most patients in Coventry are seen the same day or within 24 to 48 hours.
Microsuction uses a fine medical suction device to lift wax out of the ear, guided by a magnified endoscopic view of the canal and eardrum. Because no water is used, there is no pressure against the eardrum and no risk of trapped moisture causing infection afterwards. Syringing is done without a clear view of the canal, which is why microsuction is now considered the safer option and is what we use as standard.
A few drops of olive oil for two or three days beforehand usually helps, as softer wax lifts out more easily. We prefer our patients not to use excessive ear drops as it can sometimes cause the ear wax to melt on to the eardrum which can lead to a more complex procedure due to the proximity to the eardrum
In most cases yes, and microsuction is usually the preferred method for exactly these patients because no water enters the ear. Tell us about your history when you book so we can assess it properly on the day. If we judge that removal is not safe for you, we will say so and advise on the right route instead.
Most appointments take 15 to 30 minutes from start to finish, including the examination before and after pictures and videos are all taken.
Yes, subject to assessment. Children need to be able to stay still for the procedure, so we will talk it through with you first and take a look before deciding whether to go ahead.
We are at 312A Charter Avenue, Coventry CV4 8DA, on the Tile Hill side of the city. There is free parking directly outside in our car park and step-free disabled access. Tile Hill station is about a mile away, and buses along (18-18A) Charter Avenue connect Cannon Park, Canley and the University of Warwick.
